A possible alternative to a conventional German poetry textbook: “Graphic Poetry vom Feinsten.”

Many instructors of German would agree that it is becoming more and more difficult to teach literature and especially poetry to today’s students.  Artist Regina Kehn’s new volume could serve as an effective alternative to a conventional textbook.  In this collection of poems and short prose works, Kehn presents hidden gems of German literature in graphic form.  Kehn also includes the texts at the back of the volume (as well as brief biographies of the authors) so that students and instructors can compare the original versions with the graphic renditions.   The diversity of the artwork matches the diversity of the collection itself, including works by Günter Eich, Theodor Storm, Günter Kunert, Franz Kafka and the Brüder Grimm.

To introduce students to the study of poetry in general, and graphic poetry in particular, students could read the original texts first and then “storyboard” the stanzas to display their understanding of the text, emphasizing in color, line, and font style what they deem significant in the poem.  They could then compare their renditions to Kehn’s rendition, reading both theirs and hers as critical interpretations of the original German literary works.
